Do I really need chimney maintenance every year?

You’ve probably been told your chimney needs annual maintenance. This may seem like overkill if you don’t regularly use your fireplace. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Just as the year took a toll on you (one year older and all that), it took a toll on your chimney too. Water damage from rain and snow, animal entry, disuse, and creosote buildup can put you and your family at risk of chimney and home fires.

Ok, so I know I need maintenance – What does chimney maintenance include?

There are two main components of annual chimney maintenance:

  1. Chimney Inspection
  2. Chimney Sweep

Why are they both important? Well…

Chimney Inspections:

You should schedule a chimney inspection before you light a fire in your fireplace. During an inspection, our CSIA Certified technicians will look over the components of your chimney including the interior, masonry, firebox, and chimney cap to check for damages. Truthfully, there’s so much that goes into keeping your chimney and fireplace, insert, or stove working safely and efficiently. And inspections are important because there’s so much that can go wrong that’s out of sight.

Chimney Sweepings:

You should schedule a chimney sweep every year before using your fireplace. The sweep eliminates any creosote, a highly flammable material that builds up during the burn season. It also ensures that no animals or debris will cause smoke to blow back into your home.

When You Should Book

An annual chimney inspection by a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep® is a modest investment that can reduce the danger of chimney fires or carbon monoxide poisoning in your home.

Most homeowners wait until fall to schedule annual maintenance but it can be done at any time of the year! We suggest making your appointment once a year (spring and summer would be most convenient) or whenever your fireplace has experienced a change such as a relining or appliance replacement.

We also suggest scheduling an inspection if you are buying or selling a home – we know the market is hot right now – because this is one system that is not included in most home inspections.

What To Expect When We Come Over

8 Steps to Sweep & Clean Your Chimney and Fireplace

  1. We lay tarps out in front of the fireplace to ensure that your carpet doesn’t get dirty and then set up a high-speed dust collector to make sure that no soot gets into your home.
  2. Next, we sweep the inside of your fireplace starting at the firebox floor and continuing up to the top of the flue.
  3. We then clean, inspect, and adjust the damper and damper assembly.
  4. We use brushes on rods to sweep the flue, hand brushes for the firebox and smoke chamber, and a vacuum with a triple layer HEPA filter to control dust.
  5. After doing all this, we do a visual inspection of the outside of the chimney to check the mortar work, brickwork and crown.  Any damage or needed repair we find is documented on video or with digital photos that can be sent to you.
  6. When we are through, we will leave with you a copy of the written chimney system evaluation.
  7. We have a 100% satisfaction guarantee (homeowner must be present at time of service).
  8. Finally, we recommended this service to be done annually.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Whether you call us or we call you back after you submit a scheduling form, you can expect our team to ask you a couple of questions.

Are you representing the home? We get a lot of real-estate managers, property managers, and personal assistants that call for homeowners. Knowing who owns the home helps us to accurately save files and information relating to your services.

Have you used us for your appliance before? If so, we have all your past services on file and it speeds up the scheduling process.

Where is your home located? This ensures that you are in our service area.

What kind of appliance needs serviced? (wood-burning fireplace, wood-burning stove, gas logs, etc.)

How many stories is your home? What is the exterior of your chimney made out of? What do you have on your roof? (metal shingles, terra cotta, etc.)

*If you don’t know the answers to these questions, no worries! Our team can help you.
